Favorite: No. 1 Hamilton (10-0). The Huskies take a 50-game winning streak into play this postseason, and have won three straight state championships. Until they lose, Hamilton has to be considered the favorites.
Contender: No. 2 Brophy (10-0). Brophy has rebounded from a disappointing 6-6 2010 season quite nicely, outscoring their opponents by more than 30 points per game. Opposing defenses will have to pick their poision against Brophy. The Broncos have four game-changing wide receivers and a stud back.
Final Four: Hamilton, Brophy, No. 3 Desert Vista (9-1), No. 5 Red Mountain (8-2). I just switched my pick from Desert Ridge (8-2) to Red Mountain. Red Mountain is a new team after they put Marcus Brantley at tailback. The Mountain Lions also beat Desert Ridge in the regular season.
Week 1 winners: Hamilton, Brophy, Desert Vista, Desert Ridge, Red Mountain, No. 6 Pinnacle (8-2), No. 7 Basha (7-3), No. 8 Westview (8-2). And yes, I realize that I took chalk for the entire first round.
Upset alert: No. 6 Pinnacle should be on upset alert, after two debacles in their last two games. After leading Desert Mountain (4-6) 28-0 at the end of the third quarter, Pinnacle collapsed and lost 35-28. Then, against Brophy, they fell behind 52-0 at the half. Pinnacle's first round foe Yuma Cibola (8-2) has feasted on playing the three Yuma schools twice each.
